Ban Heng @ Orchard RELC International Hotel

This Chinese New Year, Ban Heng @ Orchard RELC International Hotel was where I had my first yu sheng. The RELC is not usually a place people would think that has an acceptable Chinese restaurant, as it is overshadowed by its more renowned neighbour, the Shangri-La Hotel. In fact my aunt (who was inviting) told us she had never tried this restaurant before, but that her friend had recommended it. As no one in my family had tried Ban Heng at this particular location, we were curious how the meal would turn out.

Updates: Tambuah Mas; Mong Hing

I have just updated the post on Tambuah Mas to include the Indonesian salad, Gado Gado.

That aside, you may have read in the Straits Times recently that Mong Hing, the 58-year-old Teochew restaurant at Beach Road will be closing in May. I strongly encourage all foodies to pay Mong Hing a visit before it disappears, because its food is really good. Must-tries are the golden pouches and sambal crayfish.

Snack: California Pistachios

Pistachios are one of my favourite snacks right now. I like their flavour and find that they do not cause the same mild digestive problems that almonds can cause me. They also taste better than walnuts, which are slightly bitter.

California Pistachios are the second cheapest pistachios in the supermarkets - a 600g bag of pistachios sells at S$12.80. The cheapest I have found is NTUC Fairprice's 800g bag of homebrand pistachios, which unfortunately appear to be out of stock at the moment. Nevertheless, California Pistachios' pistachios taste slightly better than NTUC in that they have a bit more crunch and freshness to them. The few dollars' price difference might be worth it.

No Adams PB... what do you do?

Picture from

You may know by now that our island (Singapore) appears to have run out of natural peanut butter. If you cannot live without it, what do you do??? As far as I can see, you have two options: (1) make your own natural peanut butter; and/or (2) buy natural peanut butter from overseas.

Seribu Sari Indonesian Dining, Rendezvous Hotel

There's a new Indonesian restaurant in town at Rendezvous Hotel called Seribu Sari Indonesian Dining. Having bought a $29 for $50 voucher for it, I took my parents down one weekend for dinner.

Natural peanut butter... mmm!

A pyramid of Adams peanut butter at NTUC Fairprice a few months ago. It must be getting more popular as it appears to be out of stock in many locations.

Has anyone seen it lately?

Glory Catering - Peranakan Nasi Padang

Most people would only associate the name Glory with Chinese New year cookies, kaya, and condiments like sambal chilli. But did you know that they also have a cafe at East Coast Road serving peranakan nasi padang, selling kueh, and whipping up one of the best popiahs in Singapore?
