Since I had a <a href="https://www.groupon.sg/deals/singapore/ubereats-9/105350030">Groupon voucher for UberEATS</a> lying around - $2.99 for $20 for first orders - we decided to use it to order in.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All I wanted was tahu telor and a little bit of meat, so we ordered a carb dish for mom (Ketoprak), and tahu telor and grilled chicken (Ayam Bakar) to be shared. The ordering process was easy and intuitive; the UberEATS app already had my credit card information from Uber. From the app I could see when the food had been picked up by delivery, the location of the delivery driver, and the estimated time the food would be delivered.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
UberEATS must have calculated the estimated time strictly according to the location of the delivery driver. At first it showed at first that my order had been collected and would arrive at about 5.10pm. But possibly because the location of the delivery driver had not moved, I could see the estimated time slowly increasing to around 5.20pm. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nonetheless, the food arrived at least 10 minutes earlier than the original estimated delivery time, and I was glad because looking at all the pictures of food on online menus had made me hungry!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMI2PaE_PR7rUrfBycKLNhCmHrBlIBtK_q2IkXvEm853YeXk3vwNb5R4ko8OUclJjU6lfGoB2odMx-VVp6v4jzv2N97mdX2-oBkRuVc-jGaGLvM_90lQxatGOrOq6I1Suim_SOeGQuGFE/s1600/IMG_20161223_171932.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMI2PaE_PR7rUrfBycKLNhCmHrBlIBtK_q2IkXvEm853YeXk3vwNb5R4ko8OUclJjU6lfGoB2odMx-VVp6v4jzv2N97mdX2-oBkRuVc-jGaGLvM_90lQxatGOrOq6I1Suim_SOeGQuGFE/s320/IMG_20161223_171932.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So the three dishes arrived in three separate paper cartons, stacked and held together by a clear plastic bag. I had asked for extra chilli but am not sure if any was actually given in addition to the sauces provided with every order.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hungry me attacked the <b>Tahu Telor</b> fast..... and hungry became angry. The Tahu Telor is described in the menu as "Indonesian style bean curd omelette garnished with bean sprout, sliced carrot, and sliced cucumber served with rich peanut." Welp... first of all there were no beansprouts. Second, the picture on UberEATS showed the gravy as containing chunks of peanut. However the gravy provided was some greyish liquidy thing with perhaps a tablespoon of peanut powder, and no peanut chunks. Suspect much?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But what it was that made me angry was that the tahu telor was cold, as if it had been taken from the fridge, it was not crispy, and parts of it were sour and had turned bad! You might be able to see the strange medley of colours of the tahu in
the picture below. The bits that are creamy yellow were sour. Mom tasted the tahu telor and confirmed it had gone rancid.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2CTu3Ps_oIsBxXo-8gCDXXIFpR5gg1ZuPzKAn1LbEUeGTbQ1vJ-bPjITOXKFBYyJAKrFwKIwYjSkbCI65YZgBPgRS2l9Kvo3QJzwBBeNdPJwk5qWBxVCqXLNrwOSnfkZWSN05ck70Na0/s1600/1482489995458929428222.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2CTu3Ps_oIsBxXo-8gCDXXIFpR5gg1ZuPzKAn1LbEUeGTbQ1vJ-bPjITOXKFBYyJAKrFwKIwYjSkbCI65YZgBPgRS2l9Kvo3QJzwBBeNdPJwk5qWBxVCqXLNrwOSnfkZWSN05ck70Na0/s320/1482489995458929428222.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The <b>Ayam Bakar</b> is described as "signature grilled tender chicken with a hint of sweetness served with grilled tofu, tempeh, and cut chilli in black sauce". The picture on UberEats' website shows a piece of chicken leg with a wedge of tomato, a slice of cucumber, a cabbage leaf, some green beans, and a block of tempeh. You can compare this description with the picture above - we got at room temperature half a chicken breast with the wing, sad looking pieces of cabbage, cucumber and tomato, a ball of tempeh, and no green beans. There was a chunk of "grilled tofu" that was grilled so much it was burnt on one side, and had a tinge of sourness. The chicken tasted meh.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span id="goog_292371827"></span><span id="goog_292371828"></span><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The last dish, the <b>Ketoprak</b>, is described as "beehoon, rice cake and bean sprouts served with freshly ground richly spiced peanut sauce and crackers". Beehoon, rice cake and bean sprouts - check. At least they put the crackers in a separate plastic bag. Mom said it tasted so-so, but after eating the dish she felt nauseous and needed something sweet.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what to do about the awful food especially the rancid tahu telor? The UberEATS app lets you make complaints about various things like items that are missing from your order, or the quality of the food you received. I did just that. (Which is why there aren't many pictures of food in this post - one hand was typing out the complaint, and the other used to feed my mouth a substitute of cucumber from the fridge and the toppings off a frozen-microwaved Dr Oetker's pizza.)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDwLn4aCYQgi-wXBCVkT3b-VF1YotfqokRFcQnuMLjITBUAGI0yaT7yGzxjNDXOSnsqyluEv7IpuC_nKYXhjBx5P62ar98mcJ4yReC3ldoBeVkPjd7rVwvSnvPk-BryfLUtahitaIQgbs/s1600/Screenshot_20161223-201113.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDwLn4aCYQgi-wXBCVkT3b-VF1YotfqokRFcQnuMLjITBUAGI0yaT7yGzxjNDXOSnsqyluEv7IpuC_nKYXhjBx5P62ar98mcJ4yReC3ldoBeVkPjd7rVwvSnvPk-BryfLUtahitaIQgbs/s320/Screenshot_20161223-201113.png" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When you click the selection you do not get to type out the issue; you have to wait for someone from UberEATS to start a chat with you (which they did about 10 minutes after I clicked the button). However it took UberEATS more than 1 hour after I typed out the complaint to provide a response. They apologised in somewhat broken English and said they would "<i>rufund the item and return the $4 promo code that used in this order</i> [sic]", and "<i>added $10 UberEATS promo code that will apply automatically on your future order within Singapore</i>". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I appreciated the gesture, except that I did not understand what "$4 promo code" meant since I used a $2.99 Groupon voucher for $20's value. When I enquired about it, UberEATS responded, spelling my name very wrongly and saying that they had "<i>processed the refund of the Tahu Telor worth $6.96. For me to cover the amount, I've refunded the remaining amount on your bill worth $3.13 and returned $4 promo code to cover the price of Tahu Telor.</i>"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Because I still did not understand what UberEATS was trying to say (and it was getting frustrating), I decided not to respond but to wait a few days and see what the checkout cart would report then. Updates later!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, what can I say about Ayam Penyet President but<b> 0/5</b>, thank goodness I did not order the grilled fish I had wanted to order, and <b>stay away!</b><br />
<br />
<b>-----</b><br />
<b>EDIT (28 Dec 2016)</b><br />
<br />
After some further back and forth with UberEATS today, what they meant was finally clarified: <b> </b><br />
<b>- </b>$3.13 was refunded to my credit card<br />
- The $4 "promo code" is a discount that will automatically apply to the next order<br />
- The $10 "promo code" is a discount that will automatically apply to the order after usage of the $4 promo code. They cannot be applied together.<br />
<br />
I wonder whether UberEATS spoke with Ayam Penyet President about their spoiled tahu telor, and I appreciate the $4 and $10 discounts, but it is troublesome and irritating that the discounts cannot be used in the same order. It has been frustrating enough that I may just forgo the discounts and order from foodpanda or Deliveroo next time.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a stifling hot afternoon. Mom did not feel like cooking dinner, and neither of us felt like going out for dinner or even to <i>da pau</i> (pack food) back. Our fridge was near empty as well as we were only going to the supermarket the next day. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So what to do? At 6pm we decided to check out food delivery websites. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I admit, we were a bit late jumping on the bandwagon. There are threads on HardwareZone sharing coupon codes and the things people have ordered using food delivery services. Mom told me that a friend's son uses these services every day even, because he does not like what their domestic helper cooks!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Probably the two most well known food delivery services are <a href="https://deliveroo.com.sg/">Deliveroo</a> and <a href="https://www.foodpanda.sg/">foodpanda,</a> and before placing an order it is a good idea to check the internet for coupon codes that can give you a discount on your order. There usually are coupon codes floating around that can help offset the increased menu prices and delivery charges. This time unfortunately, because there did not seem to be any coupon codes for use with Deliveroo whereas foodpanda had a 25% discount for Standard Chartered credit card holders, we decided to use foodpanda.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Remembering the delicious grilled milk fish we had in 2013 at <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2012/03/resto-surabaya.html">Resto Surabaya</a> (now known as Warung Surabaya), we decided to try out the Indonesian cafe again.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8FYZS9SfSbIi1zlFgHTUXEPzpqo3s23do5ykrQRf9yYyNF7lC5c67wHPZIsRWoeBasLQALYeEn_XYZW8gauOT9Ozd7H0h7fLOWBXJaabZ3PSb360EZ91LAa2vvj1R5YX3pvD5DDXM7Sg/s1600/order.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8FYZS9SfSbIi1zlFgHTUXEPzpqo3s23do5ykrQRf9yYyNF7lC5c67wHPZIsRWoeBasLQALYeEn_XYZW8gauOT9Ozd7H0h7fLOWBXJaabZ3PSb360EZ91LAa2vvj1R5YX3pvD5DDXM7Sg/s400/order.jpg" width="333" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The <a href="https://www.foodpanda.sg/restaurant/s1aw/warung-surabaya-lucky-plaza">menu</a> descriptions of our order are as follows:</div>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>Cah Kacang Panjang: Stir fried long bean in balachan.</li>
<li>Ayam Penyet Surabaya: Surabaya style smashed fried chicken served with crispy flakes, fried tofu, tempe and balachan chilli.</li>
<li>Tahu Telor: Deep fried egg and tofu with shrimp paste and peanut sauce.</li>
<li>Gado Gado: Mixed vegetables in peanut sauce with rice cake, tauge, cabbage, tofu, tempe, egg, long bean, carrot and cracker.</li>
<li>Soto Ayam: Chicken soup cooked with Indonesian herbs and spices served with shredded chicken, rice vermicelli, cabbage and egg.</li>
<li>Bandeng Tanpa Tulang Bakar: Grilled boneless milk fish marinated with rich spices, served with sweet and spicy chilli. </li>
</ul>
Getting through the ordering process was pretty easy. (What was actually more difficult was finding the coupon codes earlier!) Within the 40-minute estimate given by foodpanda, our order arrived.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKf5UtoFAoWyAun0wUlaTTsrHOzN6sB9_xwoCb6kaiTnYoSLyqExKsCemM76it6SEZ83-e9JNCEjAvtaGsCdxomV3bPRv9k6wCXWAiqNhZ4ynubNwWP9zRgElqlaCNQNLip70zg3D2OiI/s1600/IMG_20160926_185857.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKf5UtoFAoWyAun0wUlaTTsrHOzN6sB9_xwoCb6kaiTnYoSLyqExKsCemM76it6SEZ83-e9JNCEjAvtaGsCdxomV3bPRv9k6wCXWAiqNhZ4ynubNwWP9zRgElqlaCNQNLip70zg3D2OiI/s320/IMG_20160926_185857.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Top plastic container: long beans; Lower plastic container: Soto ayam soup</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Styrofoam containers clockwise: Gado gado, tahu telor, grilled milk fish, ayam penyet </i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i> </i></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The picture above shows how the food was packed. I was quite pleased that there was no spillage, the styrofoam and plastic packaging were not greasy or oily, and the soto ayam noodles, the gado gado crackers, and the various sauces were all packed separately so that things would not get soggy while travelling to us.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have to apologise for not taking more pictures - we were starving and could not wait to try out the delicious looking food.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
First off, the <b>tahu telor,</b> a dish I test at every Indonesian restaurant. The way the deep fried egg and tahu cubes looked, if I did not place the order myself I would have thought it came from <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2012/12/tambuah-mas-tanglin-shopping-centre.html">Tambuah Mas</a>. It looked like Tambuah Mas' tahu telor. It was as crispy as, and tasted like Tambuah Mas' tahu telor. The only difference lay in the sweet peanut sauce that you are supposed to drizzle on the dish. Warung Surabaya's was thick and packed with peanut bits, whereas I remember Tambuah Mas' to be slightly more diluted with much less peanut bits. We love having extra textural crunch, so thumbs up for Warung Surabaya's sauce.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In comparison, the <b>gado gado</b> sauce was pretty liquid compared to Tambuah Mas'. It had a texture closer to that of watery soup with finely ground peanuts like what you get with muah chee. Additionally, it tasted a little strange, so I used the tahu telor sauce instead. We definitely preferred Tambuah Mas' gado gado sauce - thicker and a little like satay sauce.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I thought that the <b>ayam penyet</b> was standard and met expectations. Lots of "crispy flakes", so it will work for people who like eating fried chicken encased in lots of batter. The meat from the whole leg (drumstick and thigh) had sufficient flavour and was moist.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Perhaps I am not used to Indonesian soup, because the <b>soto ayam</b> tasted suspiciously like chicken maggi mee soup and had a similar colour. It was amazingly saltish, but I do not think it contained MSG at least, as I did not have any MSG-thirst after. The soto ayam came with a good portion of rice noodles packed separately in a bag with some shreds of raw cabbage, half a boiled egg, and some chunks of fried chicken breast meat with "crispy flakes". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When we eat at Indonesian restaurants we usually order sambal kangkong as that is a favourite vegetable in the family. But I think another good test of a restaurant's capabilities is long beans, whether it is able to choose long beans that are not old and tough, whether it is able to cook the beans <i>al dente</i> so that they are firm to the tooth, but not raw-firm. The balachan that came with the <b>long beans</b> tasted good, but there was too little of it, and instead way too much oil. The long beans were simply a limp and soggy overcooked pile sitting in thick oil, not appetizing at all. Pity.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And lastly, the dish we were all waiting for, the <b>grilled milk fish</b>, turned out to be a disappointment. It arrived at room temperature, which was surprising since the soto ayam soup arrived piping hot. In fact, every other dish arrived at room temperature, so we were wondering whether we had been served food that was freshly cooked or that had already been sitting around. Next, the fish was tough and dry - signs of overcooking. The spices and sweet gravy rub it was marinated with was actually not too bad, but these are not things that can save overcooked meat.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Verdict? On the whole, ordering from foodpanda is an easy process and I would do it again. If coupon codes could be more easily found, it would certainly make the process faster. I think the 25% discount more or less set off the increased menu prices (around at least 50 cents per dish) and $3 delivery charge from foodpanda. But if you asked me whether I would order from Warung Surabaya again, my answer is "probably not" unless I ordered only tahu telor, ayam penyet and ayam bakar.</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yesterday afternoon I was in the Telok Ayer area near Swee Kee Fish Head Noodle House. I had not had their fish noodle soup for at least six months and hoped to dapau something back for dinner. Unfortunately they do not serve customers in between lunchtime and dinnertime. A friend, tempted by my talk of hot crispy har cheong gai, went down that evening and sent me pictures of his san lor hor fun, har cheong gai and two pyramids of fried pork lard. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Still determined to fulfill my cravings, I drove down to Ka Soh earlier today during lunchtime to do a dapau. A friendly lady said that next time I can save time by placing an order over the telephone, and picking it up later. So I took pictures of their menu and decided to put it up here for everyone's easy reference. Personally I think that Ka Soh could benefit from having more pictures in their menu showing what the dishes look like, but this is what we have.</div>

A third shop selling salad in the Raffles Place area is The Salad Shop at UOB Plaza 2. Its location is not very obvious, as it is at the back of the building facing the river. But all you have to do is to take the road in-between Standard Chartered building and UOB Plaza 2, towards the river, then turn left, and you're there.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">If you like freedom of choice as to what goes into your salads, The Salad Shop is the place for you. As you can see from the order chit below, there are three sizes of salads you can opt for: Rabbit ($8), Zebra ($10) and Elephant ($12). I am not sure who could survive on Rabbit unless they are non-Paleo and select a "main feed" of pasta, potatoes, brown rice or cous cous. If you are Paleo, you will probably have to get, and will want to get, the elephant size, for added protein.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3v5p94uNAAZiHUMfz3ZpFDZS00It5gOtWclxeLX9CRDLw3LsNeRcf0ccNcE1IKj4rvwexpkLrHSGmhclJr6NJp-KGZtXZxYC1Qeznm3jnugF1_uR2mLAhrJLYLzqYp-FBgCInOiDYOJg/s1600/20131027_195212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3v5p94uNAAZiHUMfz3ZpFDZS00It5gOtWclxeLX9CRDLw3LsNeRcf0ccNcE1IKj4rvwexpkLrHSGmhclJr6NJp-KGZtXZxYC1Qeznm3jnugF1_uR2mLAhrJLYLzqYp-FBgCInOiDYOJg/s320/20131027_195212.jpg" width="208" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">As compared to SaladStop!, a wider range of ingredients are available at The Salad Shop. However, the size of the plastic container (for takeaways) and the size of the salad is only around 3/5 of what you would get at SaladStop!, for the same price.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The salad I ordered below was Elephant size, and comprised mixed lettuce, beetroot, mixed peppers, onion, black olives, jalapenos, boiled egg, avocado, roasted tomato, chicken tikka and roasted chicken. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy_C-7tOduxCVxU6Ud65qYxr15TLdqu5iAfNQdzmiUOXHLPHCOZ89nPH5rQO_ob2W_TCPhqlIslWK8mwadpmlLWVxDiue4hGKPXoItHh0OxvE1Rg8bMyy_oBIx6IPMwXDlPNbeMfSequE/s1600/20131014_202324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy_C-7tOduxCVxU6Ud65qYxr15TLdqu5iAfNQdzmiUOXHLPHCOZ89nPH5rQO_ob2W_TCPhqlIslWK8mwadpmlLWVxDiue4hGKPXoItHh0OxvE1Rg8bMyy_oBIx6IPMwXDlPNbeMfSequE/s320/20131014_202324.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">The ingredients were fresh, but frankly the salad tasted ordinary. Just looking at the picture of the salad again, I remember how unsubstantial it was - slightly more than what I received at The Green Bar, but still not enough to fill a hungry animal who does intermittent fasting. It would probably work as an appetizer, but to have felt satisfied I would have needed 3x that portion size.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Another matter to bear in mind are their closing hours. The Salad Shop closes at 6pm from Mondays to Thursdays, and at 5pm on Fridays. I am unable to remember the exact time, but they stop taking orders between 15 to 30 minutes before closing. So if you want some salad for dinner, do go at least 35 minutes before they close to place your order. (I enquired and they have no intention of extending their operating hours.) </div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lots of salad bars have sprung up around Raffles Place, and the demand has definitely warranted the truckloads of fresh vegetables being delivered here everyday. SaladStop! is a player that has (I think) the most outlets around Singapore, and there are two just in the Raffles Place area. It is currently my favourite, just for offering the most bang for your buck.</div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNGimKKHnOYIotL_PSa6i7k1vFoEQpcALobBEEJ_NoWjWJumISLXQy8vcjB0F-Oo6wMHMQ4sPAZjhNTBY1k-cEYhOluasbpM6MDPpuqoOKve6zlpYSqWMFlO9-tWVyu6daHnHXWgI3ho0/s1600/20130927_214248.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNGimKKHnOYIotL_PSa6i7k1vFoEQpcALobBEEJ_NoWjWJumISLXQy8vcjB0F-Oo6wMHMQ4sPAZjhNTBY1k-cEYhOluasbpM6MDPpuqoOKve6zlpYSqWMFlO9-tWVyu6daHnHXWgI3ho0/s320/20130927_214248.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although SaladStop! offers "<a href="http://www.saladstop.com.sg/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=62&Itemid=88">Signature Salads</a>" like Cobb Salad, Hail Caesar (caesar salad) and Omega 3 Baby (smoked salmon salad) with pre-determined ingredient combinations, I have preferred the "<a href="http://www.saladstop.com.sg/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63&Itemid=89">Create Your Own</a>" option.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ingredients I usually go for are:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Romaine lettuce as a base - $9.90</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Free toppings of : Cucumber, carrot, onions, jalapeno, black olives, boiled egg, celery, cherry tomatoes, capsicum, broccoli and beetroot</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Premium toppings ($1.50 each) of : Avocado</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Premium toppings ($2.50 each) of : Grilled chicken </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Free dressing : Ranch dressing on the side</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Altogether, it comes up to $13.90, just $1 more than two double quarter pounders, and somewhat healthier-feeling. Their ingredients have always looked and tasted fresh - no complaints about that so far. The staff always thoughtfully chop the romaine lettuce into smaller pieces so that you do not have to struggle with big leaves, and the ingredients are well-tossed before being put into a huge plastic bowl. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You might wonder what the difference is between SaladStop! and Salad Shop at UOB Plaza 2. They may offer similar ingredients, but SaladStop! is generous with the quantity it dishes out. You cannot see from the picture, but the salad is <u>large</u>, and has the most bulk you can get for its price. I have had salads from The Green Bar and Salad Shop, and have still felt hungry after, but not when I have had a salad from SaladStop!.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The only thing is, SaladStop! at Chevron House closes at 8.30pm. So if you think it's gonna be a late night, better run down at 8pm and grab your salad before it closes!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know, I know, I have not been posting anything in a long while, and I have got a valid excuse to tender: working late nights. Anyhow, when I was labouring in the office on those nights, ending up <i>da pao-ing</i> meals (doing takeaways), I also took shots of what I ate :)</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
And it was all these awards that was what drew hungry me to its shop at Hitachi Towers at 7.30pm on a Thursday evening, when I was roaming around for food.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaJ8mPnL2yZH5TUWXxxsqORIdKIbyzsi-_sgE9NIUMjevRSeIc2H9h0gIQi7J8Xk4R2M4b59ADZjQj7ZNjtAXIHCQRgR78pDh6Ao0e_Y5BBPzdLHTzUcqrHWdLCfRaQHIcqwZlw-9qL4Y/s1600/20131006_085925.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaJ8mPnL2yZH5TUWXxxsqORIdKIbyzsi-_sgE9NIUMjevRSeIc2H9h0gIQi7J8Xk4R2M4b59ADZjQj7ZNjtAXIHCQRgR78pDh6Ao0e_Y5BBPzdLHTzUcqrHWdLCfRaQHIcqwZlw-9qL4Y/s320/20131006_085925.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With so many tantalizing options to try, I decided to go for the most popular and "Best Salad" that night, the Smoked Duck Surprise. This salad is described by The Green Bar as "smoked duck with roasted pumpkin and rosemary potatoes on a bed of crisp greens drizzled with vinaigrette and olive oil, and a dash of freshly grated parmesan". </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Further, as I was craving for meat that night, I asked for extra meat in the form of the tandoori chicken. The served happily obliged for an additional $3.50.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcDhTfRSV2_rchuZTfDifcXPPXUbA95I3N7WZ_57vr0i_lmlBeyeZTTWB0htNJkF3pgbbZBcixV-UEd_P0O68x8JFdiZS6_Wb3MkIl5hvT49CeizWntl9UQIc3LYOi9FQxk4dSSNxVRoU/s1600/20130926_194248.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcDhTfRSV2_rchuZTfDifcXPPXUbA95I3N7WZ_57vr0i_lmlBeyeZTTWB0htNJkF3pgbbZBcixV-UEd_P0O68x8JFdiZS6_Wb3MkIl5hvT49CeizWntl9UQIc3LYOi9FQxk4dSSNxVRoU/s320/20130926_194248.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even though I was eating it from a plastic container, the salad looked and smelled appetizing. However, given the shallow container, there was actually a higher ratio of meat to veg in there. Good for meat lovers, not so good for veg lovers. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The skin of the smoked duck was covered with ground black pepper, and its pinkish meat was fragrant. In fact it tasted exactly like the one sold at the deli counter of Cold Storage. As for the tandoori chicken, the tender chunks had definitely been well-marinated before cooking, and I was happy with them. It would have lent more flavour to the salad leaves though if the chicken had been served together with some of the creamy yoghurt it would have been marinated in.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Altogther there were about three chunks of soft pumpkin carrying hints of herbs, and about five chunks of rosemary potatoes, which I skipped. There were much less salad leaves than I would have liked, as I rely on these things to create some bulk in my stomach and give me the feeling of fullness.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In conclusion, I cannot deny that the Smoked Duck Surprise was generally a tasty salad. But minus the potatoes, I think it is more suitable as a snack or light meal, than a dinner that can fill one's stomach. Nonetheless, I think the salads from The Green Bar are worth a try if you are in the Raffles Place area. Have a go and let me know!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the third day of Chinese New Year after an afternoon of driving around visiting relatives, we were feeling slightly carsick and ill from the heat. As Longhouse Food Centre was on our way home, we stopped by to pick up some dinner. Having had rich dishes on the previous days like pen cai, and lots of Chinese New Year cookies, we just wanted something hot, and plain and simple. </div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
After taking a look at the various stalls' offerings, we settled on food from Bugis Street Chuen Chuen Chicken Rice, namely their chicken congee and chicken feet.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRuAGAJr5Iy3UOw18go7pgPCYj9sZOfMgHJfxtrBZfGgeTXt67wfaPXwtZymjdLMr7L5LuIN6aUBgxR243_boQ0MdWn7JK0NqZjXnq8eGR1PUngYz7p4WBOseJz2Blx6fW4qRr6xyOUSU/s1600/20130212_182544.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRuAGAJr5Iy3UOw18go7pgPCYj9sZOfMgHJfxtrBZfGgeTXt67wfaPXwtZymjdLMr7L5LuIN6aUBgxR243_boQ0MdWn7JK0NqZjXnq8eGR1PUngYz7p4WBOseJz2Blx6fW4qRr6xyOUSU/s1600/20130212_182544.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mom had most of this congee. I only had a few spoonfuls. But I could have gobbled (or drank) the whole thing. The hot, silky soft porridge was immensely soothing. Mixed with the special chicken-flavoured soy sauce, it was soothingly delicious, warming and satisfying, the kind of comfort food you would want on a cold day or when you feel ill. Probably the only congee that could beat it is that from Crystal Jade and Imperial Treasure.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5-ap82GRzdz5p0_gZwfC1JofCWno0oPAr6sb7sEboRIjOpBd1RZkuUVFRC75bDf6PVKmubMjrc9dZw8LNMQoUVw1li__IM_WwqWMDWqWL92d4lOHZQZrONjtWw8nY0Cph5uM8SwQ9_90/s1600/20130212_182609.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5-ap82GRzdz5p0_gZwfC1JofCWno0oPAr6sb7sEboRIjOpBd1RZkuUVFRC75bDf6PVKmubMjrc9dZw8LNMQoUVw1li__IM_WwqWMDWqWL92d4lOHZQZrONjtWw8nY0Cph5uM8SwQ9_90/s1600/20130212_182609.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chicken feet, whether cooked Thai style or Chinese style, has always been a favourite of my sister and I because of its crunchiness. As chicken feet itself is tasteless, much depends on the sauce / gravy accompanying the feet. In comparison to their chicken porridge, I found Chuen Chuen Chicken Rice's chicken feet average, and a little on the sweet side. </div>
<br />
If anything, I would return to the stall for more chicken porridge.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love Indian food. The only problem is that mom does not, and therefore she does not cook it. To get my fix, I have to eat it outside, and it's not that often that I get to eat it outside either as I usually have dinner at home on weekdays and dinner with my parents on weekends. But one Saturday when my parents had a function, I took the opportunity to have an Indian dinner at Curry Gardenn with my aunt and uncle.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That Saturday evening, Curry Gardenn was packed. People were queueing outside. It was by luck that we only had to wait a few minutes before one table was vacated and we could sit. Curry Gardenn's <a href="http://www.currygardenn.com/menu.php">menu</a> is extensive and there are many options to choose from. Like the idiom "there are many ways to skin a cat", Curry Gardenn offers chicken (amongst other meats) that can be done more than 17 ways.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can ask the servers for their recommendations, but hopefully you already know what you want. For our table of three, the server recommended that we order individual dishes instead of a set meal. But when our dishes arrived, we saw that the portion size probably only for two, and not much bigger than the portion size of person who ordered their set meals. Choose wisely.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzBK5weSpQfgr3VsTVukh5gHUfH1dw9fof6ZtQb3kh5QQI6g1ivrT-4p7gyrx-E_xOJGKwTboC50TLVPdRpfnDDl6tJEqaLS_-8KwCA1BIscl1E0ygG1REESA4WDhDKs1jbSqzs8cvz_s/s1600/20130519_185729.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzBK5weSpQfgr3VsTVukh5gHUfH1dw9fof6ZtQb3kh5QQI6g1ivrT-4p7gyrx-E_xOJGKwTboC50TLVPdRpfnDDl6tJEqaLS_-8KwCA1BIscl1E0ygG1REESA4WDhDKs1jbSqzs8cvz_s/s1600/20130519_185729.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My aunt and uncle shared a <b>plain naan</b> and a <b>garlic naan</b>. We also shared the <b>chicken tikka masala</b>,<b> rogan josh</b>,<b> </b>and <b>mixed veg kurma</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Aunt and uncle commented that the <b>naan</b> fell below their expectations. They like naan that is light, airy and poofy, with a crisp exterior and burnt bits. Curry Gardenn's naan however was flat, thick, dense and doughy. When my uncle asked the owner about it, the owner explained that he does not use baking powder / soda as it is not healthy. That was the first time I heard that baking powder / soda is unhealthy. I do not know how true it is, but my standard for naan's is the same as aunt's and uncle's, and if I cannot have that then I would rather go without. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The <b>rest of the dishes</b> had such a beautifully complex and exquisite flavour. As Curry Gardenn does not use coconut milk in its dishes, but a blend of fruit and nuts, the gravy is much lighter in terms of taste, and on the stomach. Aunt and uncle liked the lightness, and remarked that they could eat a lot without feeling "<i>gela</i>" (nauseous from rich food). Having a light gravy is a nice change - I concur, but only as a <u>change</u> from eating heavy curries, which I prefer a little more than half the time for its heartiness.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In terms of portion size, it was all disappointingly so very small, for the price. There were perhaps only five pieces of chicken in the pot, not even enough to have two each. It was the same situation with the mutton and the vegetables. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJdsjgfwjGvKddXcGOZzauw3FBqMirclhEpBNLxSqgDWETh0IcIMSldguaCuJh2Df5w_4K0OEWeDsNbNuGswnjj7AMqz4vzv4gQLoEqExGgmdD2dWZicQW9KzXhL51aT1Yk_L6IIsM1Lo/s1600/20130519_192832.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJdsjgfwjGvKddXcGOZzauw3FBqMirclhEpBNLxSqgDWETh0IcIMSldguaCuJh2Df5w_4K0OEWeDsNbNuGswnjj7AMqz4vzv4gQLoEqExGgmdD2dWZicQW9KzXhL51aT1Yk_L6IIsM1Lo/s1600/20130519_192832.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As we were still hungry after those dishes, we ordered a <b>tandoori chicken</b> to share. Remembering that we had received a bigger portion in the past, when we ordered to take away, we told the staff that it was a take-away. Indeed, when the clear plastic bag of our tandoori chicken arrived, it seemed like there were eight to ten chunks of chicken within.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But after my uncle asked the same staff to heat up the chicken, it returned in a similar metallic container and there seemed to be fewer pieces of chicken returned to us.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the whole, Curry Gardenn serves excellent tasting curries, but be prepared to leave with a hole in your wallet if it is a feast that you want.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">During the weekend, I had invited my aunt and uncle over for dinner, which called for some gelato / ice cream as dessert. Ever since my success with David Lebovitz's <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2013/02/pistachio-gelato.html">pistachio gelato</a>, I had wanted to use the same receipe with a different nut or seed. As I love gooey black sesame, I decided to use the same receipe with roasted black sesame seeds.</div><br />
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq5rhyphenhyphendIG6ZezczS1PvpjzUKogqHDELbkmxR4dCb6AdzOcaR4RjhAtMBWf3NpBUjJOGX00JOr-bOSovPMcyQ7uqWXriFWgH4lUfB4td6Eo7ZeUpV6lMnfu2QnpsssMdXpPtrUyPq1WJHQ/s1600/20130629_213505.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq5rhyphenhyphendIG6ZezczS1PvpjzUKogqHDELbkmxR4dCb6AdzOcaR4RjhAtMBWf3NpBUjJOGX00JOr-bOSovPMcyQ7uqWXriFWgH4lUfB4td6Eo7ZeUpV6lMnfu2QnpsssMdXpPtrUyPq1WJHQ/s1600/20130629_213505.jpg" height="320" width="275" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">This picture was taken immediately after the gelato had been churned. We were greeted with this black beauty, which I thought looked quite enticing, even though it looked a little lumpy as the mixture touching the edges of the metal container froze up more than the mixture in the middle. </div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"> My uncle and aunt commented that it tasted not bad. My uncle had two bowls of it. He also commented that its texture was like Nestum (?!). </div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Upon tasting the gelato myself, I felt that it could have done well with less sugar still, and that it could have been nicer if it was thicker or denser in black sesame seeds. I was looking for the same thick gooey sesame seed texture when eating tang yuan, and this gelato went only two-thirds of the way to achieving that. Well, that will be for round two!</div><br />
<br />
<b>Black sesame gelato</b><br />
<a href="http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2007/09/pistachio-gelat/">Adapted from David Lebovitz's pistachio gelato receipe </a><br />
<br />
<u>Ingredients:</u><br />
6 cups (1.5 litres) whole milk<br />
2/3 cup sugar*<br />
4 tablespoons cornstarch (also known as corn flour)<br />
400g roasted black sesame seeds**<br />
a few drops of lime juice<br />
<br />
* I found the final product sweet, and could have done with slightly less than 2/3 cup sugar.<br />
** I would have preferred the final product to be more dense, in terms of the black sesame, and I think that the amount of milk used can accommodate 500-600g black sesame powder, for a really thick slurry.<br />
<br />
<u>Method:</u><br />
1. Make a slurry by mixing 3/4 cup of the milk with the cornstarch, mixing until the starch is dissolved and the mixture is smooth.<br />
<br />
2. Heat the rest of the milk in a saucepan with the sugar.<br />
<br />
3. When it almost starts to boil, stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook at gentle simmer for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.<br />
<br />
4. Remove from heat, scrape into a bowl.<br />
<br />
5. Grind the roasted black sesame seeds until a fine powder.<br />
<br />
6. Whisk in the black sesame powder and add a few drops of lime (or lemon, or orange) juice until smooth. <br />
<br />
7. Chill the mixture thoroughly, preferably overnight.<br />
<br />
8. Freeze the gelato in your ice cream machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ines Rosales' tortas are unique thin, light, crispy, flaky biscuits, that are covered with a sugar glaze and that go fantastically well with tea or coffee. Each torta had bits of crystallised orange on its surface, which provided a hint of orange with every bite. The slice of torta below is not actually burnt. The dark spots you see are the result of the olive oil and crystallised orange soaking through the biscuit. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Seville Orange tortas were the second flavour of tortas I had tried from Ines Rosales. The first I had was Cinnamon, which I thought was even better. Besides these sweet dessert-type tortas, there are three other flavours of tortas out there: original, rosemary & thyme, and sesame & sea salt.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
NTUC Finest was selling these beauties at one point of time last year, but unfortunately I have not seen Ines Rosales' tortas on the shelves since. I am unsure if NTUC Finest imported the tortas from Spain, but they are available in certain US supermarkets, and on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_grocery?_encoding=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=Ines%20Rosales&node=16310101">Amazon.com</a> at least.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">Ever since I read that this new French place called Poulèt was serving up roast chicken French style, I have been wanting to try it out. I never got down to it as we rarely visit the places its restaurants are located, and have stopped visiting Great World City due to their S$1.70 per hour / S$3.63 per entry parking. Anyhow, my father dragged us to Bugis+ one Sunday with the aim of tempting us into having a Shabu-shabu dinner. But we ended up at Poulet! </div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">Poulèt's Bugis+ ambience is pleasant, and if you are seated by the balcony, you get a good view of the going-ons of the various floors.</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">Despite Poulèt's offering of a new chicken dish, we decided to go instead with their "star dish", the Poulèt Roti. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGbyldqUf63NTMA7LN5Y-QbfcUqI7Xdr4L0zlm6GMxNC-Xw6yzBkXIOsMEVfUuonStnBPRBN0C0xACSUQkJtol5HOG6l9OBZFsncshSVHfA5dopE8RMRwfDiJR-v23akGVLlzoy1hvrD8/s1600/20130413_190048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGbyldqUf63NTMA7LN5Y-QbfcUqI7Xdr4L0zlm6GMxNC-Xw6yzBkXIOsMEVfUuonStnBPRBN0C0xACSUQkJtol5HOG6l9OBZFsncshSVHfA5dopE8RMRwfDiJR-v23akGVLlzoy1hvrD8/s1600/20130413_190048.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">We also went with one of their salads as a starter. Unfortunately I cannot remember what the name of the salad was, and neither does Poulèt's website have a copy of its menu. The salad was well-tossed, and its combination of various oil-coated leaves, cherry tomatoes, sliced olives and pine nuts worked harmoniously. We could have eaten mounds. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFdnB7U0FdK1gA-j7f1Bn2Fuzg4GA2dYyuzRin7gHmw5_P56ryOng-D6Qdi514jNAM12qpfyrV6UhhIkAh1DNZc-n2L-WNM8-mEa4c7iwJGYm7bQHohzByD9Ewo4oNV6qN9HNxk7-ToMM/s1600/20130413_190408.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFdnB7U0FdK1gA-j7f1Bn2Fuzg4GA2dYyuzRin7gHmw5_P56ryOng-D6Qdi514jNAM12qpfyrV6UhhIkAh1DNZc-n2L-WNM8-mEa4c7iwJGYm7bQHohzByD9Ewo4oNV6qN9HNxk7-ToMM/s1600/20130413_190408.jpg" height="192" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Mom needed some carbs, so she ordered a baguette. She commented that it tasted average.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOYaC5ACy0ypkxBazyt_H34OOxZcqJUqA1Ps2tsWrGrBce5vbO9RaJNU0wgOVP7ISNOFp5VVlXbF01Q9vZqWMMBVVZbHrrO55ud9Ly5k2JQ7GD1y34MPxCyId5MYPRwA9a9ZpXSSGPprg/s1600/20130413_190641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOYaC5ACy0ypkxBazyt_H34OOxZcqJUqA1Ps2tsWrGrBce5vbO9RaJNU0wgOVP7ISNOFp5VVlXbF01Q9vZqWMMBVVZbHrrO55ud9Ly5k2JQ7GD1y34MPxCyId5MYPRwA9a9ZpXSSGPprg/s1600/20130413_190641.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">When our Poulèt Roti arrived, I stared at it for awhile. It was plated up simple - white casserole dish with a handful of spinach leaves tucked between the two halves of chicken. Poulèt must have used a spring chicken or kampung chicken as it was small. However, it did not look very appetizing compared to the pictures in the reviews I had read, for example <a href="http://danielfooddiary.com/2012/08/14/poulet/">Daniel Food Diary</a> and <a href="http://www.misstamchiak.com/poulet-amazing-french-roast-chicken/">Miss Tam Chiak</a>. Nonetheless, all of us dug in with hungry anticipation.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2gEwHFsaVdmldHLT9Dgq7m6D2JrVoYUuDTtmiAamaucyCCavOfgY2Tcf_T5X7g7lF_hyphenhyphenYI5ikZw4pOhdiikORPB9JVwADBG2-ckEA_bksMTpjx786yF1oyfUOAazLewRAHEcyvjXXaf0/s1600/20130413_190743.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2gEwHFsaVdmldHLT9Dgq7m6D2JrVoYUuDTtmiAamaucyCCavOfgY2Tcf_T5X7g7lF_hyphenhyphenYI5ikZw4pOhdiikORPB9JVwADBG2-ckEA_bksMTpjx786yF1oyfUOAazLewRAHEcyvjXXaf0/s1600/20130413_190743.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">As expected, the chicken meat was mostly tender. Only the breast was a little overcooked and dry, requiring assistance from the mushroom Chardonnay sauce. While the sliced mushrooms themselves were a tasty add-on to the dish, the cream sauce was so creamy and rich that it made all of us feel kind of nauseous, and we ended up doing without. Mom regretted not ordering the Poulèt de Cranberry instead, and had to have a sweet cup of tea to combat the richness of the white sauce.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">As the Poulèt Roti has been put forth as Poulèt's "star dish", we could not help but feel somewhat disappointed at its taste and texture. However I would want to taste the other dishes on its menu like their lamb shank, duck's leg and oxtail, before passing final judgment.</div><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After a hard day's work, I decided to treat myself with some Japanese food. Generally, I prefer to <i>da pao</i> my sashimi etc because it is much cheaper than eating at Japanese restaurants. You may remember that <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2012/01/sashimi.html">Takashimaya's Cold Storage</a> is one of my favourite places for taking away sashimi. As much as I would have preferred to get dinner from there that evening, NTUC Finest at TripleOne Somerset was nearer. </div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
By around 7-8pm, the sushi and sashimi are reduced in price by a dollar or two. I would have bought a block of sashimi but only the sliced ones were left. I would also have liked some hamachi, but Finest's range is limited compared to Cold Storage's. In the end I went with grilled baby scallops, chuka wakame and flying fish roe.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It took about 15 minutes to get home, which should not have affected the quality of the sashimi as it was not a searingly hot night. I have also taken the same amount of time to carry sashimi from Cold Storage home, and it still tasted fresh. However, Finest's sashimi tasted somewhat old / stale when I had it. A disappointment.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, that disappointment was made up for a little by the grilled baby scallops. Each of them was bouncy and bursting with juice. With a dab of wasabi and soy sauce, they tasted perfect. Flying fish roe is quite salty, so I do not actually recommend eating it by itself (which I did LOL). If you are Paleo, you can probably create a salad from, eg. sliced japanese cucumber and julienned carrots, and top it with some of the roe. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As for the chuka wakame, I had never eaten it before at Japanese restaurants as I always thought it was just some side dish that was not worth the money. But earlier in the week I was just drawn to the wakame and got a box to try. Bam! I was instantly bought. So I just had to buy another to eat again.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
If you are going to <i>da pao </i>your sashimi, another place I can recommend besides Takashimaya's Cold storage is Paragon's Marketplace. The people behind the Japanese counter are Japanese, and their produce look impeccably fresh. The next time I crave for sashimi, I will just make myself walk there to them out.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One hot weekend, we were just too lazy to go out for dinner. My father ended up packing back a packet of roast chicken and some chicken liver from Xiang Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice at Haig Road Market & Cooked Food Centre. </div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGfN7PI-iiBKLfERY6PG-oqTlyhFqaNPLao1seIw1leLcR3JKoHHGb3oIq5K-SCvEF6Z5hNDkYW09k2X5HC0O_88AfM3b8dZNzNX2s6TaR2aAX7cYI9gwpc4HUxC0c3BZuEenXJxC_gfU/s1600/20120929_180342.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGfN7PI-iiBKLfERY6PG-oqTlyhFqaNPLao1seIw1leLcR3JKoHHGb3oIq5K-SCvEF6Z5hNDkYW09k2X5HC0O_88AfM3b8dZNzNX2s6TaR2aAX7cYI9gwpc4HUxC0c3BZuEenXJxC_gfU/s320/20120929_180342.jpg" height="192" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was mine and mom's first time eating chicken from Xiang Ji. As the chicken looked average to me, at first sight, I did not have very high expectations. But the first piece of dark meat surprised me, and every subsequent piece of meat was a delight. Every piece of meat, including the breast meat, was fragrant and succulent, sliding down my throat easily. Not much chewing had to be involved. In 15 minutes, I had polished off half the chicken without any effort.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What is unique about the way Xiang Ji serves its chicken is that besides providing the usual sliced cucumber, it also provides pickles and coriander. Like a burger, if and when you find the chicken meat too rich, you can get a nice sourish pickle that cuts through the richness. Although I did not feel <i>jela </i>(nauseous) from eating the roast chicken alone, I love pickles and enjoyed them with the meat. They were a thoughtful accompaniment, adding value to the dish. I will certainly be returning for more.</div>

<br />
Since some people asked me what on earth I bought from iHerb when I told them I had three DHL shipments, I thought I'd just share it with everyone at one shot. (Yes, three!)<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwUv1waaWoNEthM_38vXmF6u2X5OTK3iKi0MrWpa_hxIWXCO0Gz4QUeIqTeuzzMxepRDjhG0hK6AceDpW8rj7Guyt_IY_iq6cw2BKCx3sspGWvYwzZmCLaPc27d2L9lr9MNEn8ebPFEKs/s200/DRB-00165-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br />
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwUv1waaWoNEthM_38vXmF6u2X5OTK3iKi0MrWpa_hxIWXCO0Gz4QUeIqTeuzzMxepRDjhG0hK6AceDpW8rj7Guyt_IY_iq6cw2BKCx3sspGWvYwzZmCLaPc27d2L9lr9MNEn8ebPFEKs/s200/DRB-00165-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First up was <b><a href="http://www.iherb.com/Doctor-s-Best-Best-Fucoidan-70-60-Veggie-Caps/7139">Doctor's Best Fucoidan</a></b>, which was for my father really, to assist in lowering blood pressure. He feels that it has been useful. A 70+ year old male colleague at work also swears by it. A bottle is going for US$29.92, for 60 caps of 300mg fucoidan extract.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiujBdfOTKGe2PSoCZhq73wcNHyBi0QiHHwjPwHY9a2xJ8_3s4RlS8ToqzLA2KJJ__ZzUBVPKFfz4-3CSBfJ8411d0JThixFNygO3QqUIilGXJZfdNqbRiIXCuTQUYdMWcI28oLLNMxVYA/s200/NOW-01662-0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiujBdfOTKGe2PSoCZhq73wcNHyBi0QiHHwjPwHY9a2xJ8_3s4RlS8ToqzLA2KJJ__ZzUBVPKFfz4-3CSBfJ8411d0JThixFNygO3QqUIilGXJZfdNqbRiIXCuTQUYdMWcI28oLLNMxVYA/s200/NOW-01662-0.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second-most important item was fish oil. As DHL shipping was heavily discounted, starting from US$10, I chose to go with fish oil with a lesser concentration of EPA/DHA for savings in costs that would offset the cost of shipping. <b>Now Foods</b> is a well-known and popular brand in the US, and I went with their <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Ultra-Omega-3-500-EPA-250-DHA-180-Softgels/8341"><b>Ultra Omega-3</b></a>. One bottle contains 180 softgels of 500mg EPA / 250mg DHA each, and is going for US$23.79.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Having to juggle between price and weight limitations led me to splitting up the order of fucoidan and fish oil into two shipments. (In Singapore, orders above S$400 are subject to Goods and Services Tax.)</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQf3nJ7sjaYCAhkkqR802DGikar9vEzBhctUpUjJFq_2phMdhuqXOfM543Krq8bAgPIt8VMQKDItyrLi3WrD-FctejM9QfvnWmo2ggyw1AyHGZm69I2iyx_pI3thqskHQH83alSS-ZqGY/s200/NOW-02964-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQf3nJ7sjaYCAhkkqR802DGikar9vEzBhctUpUjJFq_2phMdhuqXOfM543Krq8bAgPIt8VMQKDItyrLi3WrD-FctejM9QfvnWmo2ggyw1AyHGZm69I2iyx_pI3thqskHQH83alSS-ZqGY/s200/NOW-02964-3.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I suffer from low stomach acid, I added on some digestive enzymes. I have always used <b><a href="http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Super-Enzymes-180-Capsules/857">Now Foods' Super Enzymes</a></b>, which Robb Wolf recommends for its inclusion of Betaine HCl. A bottle of 180 capsules costs US$19.11.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My father wanted some spirulina for my mother, and a friend got me interested enough in the seaweed to order some for myself too. <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-100-Natural-Spirulina-500-mg-500-Tablets/783"><b>Now Foods' Spirulina</b></a> is one of the cheapest at iHerb. One US$21.66 bottle contains 500 tablets, with 500mg spirulina in each tablet.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTna9PGdGhR1ov5q5bqJx5JemCVrpBAPBg9dXzka6BsC6oQL53-CdAm1ii0DvFw_PL5hiI6PLbtgn2frVmMmUAC9W0INt8CLs1kuihBL3k5jrB8aVacYyPaVqZei8mJeG8cx7k_wvj9CY/s200/KTT-03240-0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTna9PGdGhR1ov5q5bqJx5JemCVrpBAPBg9dXzka6BsC6oQL53-CdAm1ii0DvFw_PL5hiI6PLbtgn2frVmMmUAC9W0INt8CLs1kuihBL3k5jrB8aVacYyPaVqZei8mJeG8cx7k_wvj9CY/s200/KTT-03240-0.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Kettle Chips</b> are cheaper in the US than in Singapore. iHerb's price and size tempted me into trying two flavours / cuts that are not available here: <b><a href="http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-100-Natural-Spirulina-500-mg-500-Tablets/783">Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper</a></b>, and <b><a href="http://www.iherb.com/Kettle-Foods-Krinkle-Cut-Potato-Chips-Party-Size-Sea-Salt-14-oz-397-g/33435">Sea Salt</a></b>. Each party-sized bag of 397g of ridged chips is going for US$4.83, and that is not even after my VIP discount at iHerb. In contrast, when they are on offer in Singapore, one 142g bag costs S$3.45. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLi3v8pLk6YvnK2tShYGctjaQZOXJCZvCbQC9EVHqeRHF0Pd4uQRaDLv6R3uypQ8U1zle9U1f79d75iORYpp8HAFzRUWSGLyM1Q3i9NeOt84UG5TEEVyOtvNRxr5JH65oYXHlO3wvmmQY/s200/NUT-31114-0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLi3v8pLk6YvnK2tShYGctjaQZOXJCZvCbQC9EVHqeRHF0Pd4uQRaDLv6R3uypQ8U1zle9U1f79d75iORYpp8HAFzRUWSGLyM1Q3i9NeOt84UG5TEEVyOtvNRxr5JH65oYXHlO3wvmmQY/s200/NUT-31114-0.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You probably know already that I ordered a jar of <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Nutiva-Coconut-Manna-15-oz-425-g/24380"><b>Nutiva's Coconut Manna</b></a> to try. My review can be found <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2013/06/nutiva-coconut-manna.html">here</a>. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I continued to find <b><a href="http://www.iherb.com/Source-Naturals-DIM-Diindolylmethane-100-mg-120-Tablets/18225">DIM</a></b> and <b><a href="http://www.iherb.com/Natrol-Calcium-D-Glucarate-60-Tablets/2281">Calcium D-glucarate</a></b> helpful, after <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2012/08/estrogen-exercise-and-imbalance.html">my post on estrogen imbalance</a>, I ordered another batch of both. I also restocked other miscellaneous items like <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Healthy-Origins-Vitamin-D3-5-000-IU-360-Softgels/18335">Healthy Origins' <b>Vitamin D3</b></a>, <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-L-Tryptophan-500-mg-120-Vcaps/13859">Now Foods' <b>L-Tryptophan</b></a>, <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Magnesium-Citrate-200-mg-250-Tablets/691">Now Foods' <b>Magnesium Citrate</b></a>, and <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Zinc-Picolinate-50-mg-120-Capsules/878">Now Foods' <b>Zinc Picolinate</b></a>.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Altogether enough for three DHL shipments don't you think? ;)</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I cannot repeat enough that iHerb's promotion of free international shipping / heavily discounted DHL shipping is rare - maybe about twice a year. Now's the time to stock up on supplements, and note that this round ends in <u>June 2013.</u><br />
<br />
If it is your first time ordering from iHerb, the coupon code "XOJ002" will save you US$5-10 on your first order.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">While <a href="http://www.iherb.com/">iHerb</a> was having its rare <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2013/06/iherb-free-international-shipping.html">sale</a>, I decided to order a jar of Nutiva's Coconut Manna to try, since many people have been saying that it is a cheaper version of <a href="http://wildchildurbancity.blogspot.sg/2012/04/artisana-coconut-butter.html">Artisana's Coconut Butter</a>. Not having had proper smooth coconut butter for more than six months, I was waiting eagerly for my DHL package to arrive.</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">According to the label on the back of the bottle, Nutiva's Coconut Manna is made of pure, dried coconut flesh. Coconut Manna contains 12% fiber, 9% protein, and nourishing fats. If you live in a cold country, you will have to liquify the Coconut Manna by placing the jar in hot tap water for 5-10 minutes. Regardless, there will most likely be a layer of oil on top, which you should not throw away, but stir into the thicker coconut paste below. I vaguely remember Artisana's Coconut Butter having a layer of oil on top as well, but not as much as the Coconut Manna.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8kXq49KnLbLj_Nr94LTga3e-qmAMp7ioFcTvzcRVbu3cPqkMTa_u5j58XG61-Zxl6nxNIg84F9JBdptOGfp097mn9X7RDxkskJ8tC4yOaC-5OywYq-VZU9VYj0olucNUYTe3gdKLBYow/s1067/20130613_201300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8kXq49KnLbLj_Nr94LTga3e-qmAMp7ioFcTvzcRVbu3cPqkMTa_u5j58XG61-Zxl6nxNIg84F9JBdptOGfp097mn9X7RDxkskJ8tC4yOaC-5OywYq-VZU9VYj0olucNUYTe3gdKLBYow/s1067/20130613_201300.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">After thorough stirring, the Coconut Manna should turn into a thick liquid with the consistency of pancake batter, like in the picture below. Compared to Artisana's Coconut Butter, the Coconut Manna was not as thick, after stirring all the oil in. That results in easier and more consistent spreading on a surface, if you want to spread it on bread or fruit. If you have already stirred everything, no worries! --the oil will probably float to the top again the next day, and you just need to stir less of it into the paste.</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">Texture-wise, the Coconut Manna was just slightly grainier than Artisana's Coconut Butter. But in my opinion it was hardly noticeable. </div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Aside from these differences, the two products tasted exactly the same. Really. If a blindfold was placed over my eyes, I might have thought it was Artisana's Coconut Butter. Maybe only the huge coconut butter fans would be able to tell the difference.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><!--more-->All in all, I was pretty happy slurping mouthful after mouthful of Nutiva's Coconut Manna. It is a wholesome, healthy, versatile treat that can be eaten on its own as well as used as a spread, in baking, etc. At about US$2 less than Artisana's Coconut Butter, I think it is a worthy substitute that all Artisana fans should give a go. </div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">A <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Nutiva-Coconut-Manna-15-oz-425-g/24380">jar (15 oz / 425g) of Nutiva's Coconut Manna</a> sells on iHerb for US$8.88. If you're a coconut butter addict, you can buy a <a href="http://www.iherb.com/Nutiva-Coconut-Manna-5-lbs-2-13-kg/45757">15lb / 2.13kg bag of Coconut Manna</a> for US$28.42, which I think is worth it if you have the storage space.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">As iHerb's free international shipping / heavily discounted DHL shipping is <u>ending with June 2013</u>, I suggest you get your hands on a jar or bag of Nutiva's Coconut Manna before then! If it is your first time ordering from iHerb, the coupon code "XOJ002" will save you US$5-10 on your first order.</div>Wild Childhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06995291503197653898noreply@blogger.com0
