Snack: California Pistachios

Pistachios are one of my favourite snacks right now. I like their flavour and find that they do not cause the same mild digestive problems that almonds can cause me. They also taste better than walnuts, which are slightly bitter.

California Pistachios are the second cheapest pistachios in the supermarkets - a 600g bag of pistachios sells at S$12.80. The cheapest I have found is NTUC Fairprice's 800g bag of homebrand pistachios, which unfortunately appear to be out of stock at the moment. Nevertheless, California Pistachios' pistachios taste slightly better than NTUC in that they have a bit more crunch and freshness to them. The few dollars' price difference might be worth it.

Snacks: Black pepper duck breast

Earlier this year I wrote a post on "quick food" for those on the go or who have no time to cook. Another of my favourite Paleo snacks / meals, which is also a nice break from chicken, is the roast duck breast sold at Cold Storage for S$3.95.

Nut stash from the US

If you are a nut lover and are in the US, or someone can carry nuts from the US back for you, do give Costco's Kirkland-brand nuts a shot.  Everytime my sister visits from the US, she carries with her a few bags of Kirkland's nuts, and every single piece has tasted really fresh compared to the nuts I have bought in Chinatown. In August, my sister returned from the US again and brought back these bags of nuts for us.

Snacks: Roasted Almonds

The pictures of the meals I post are sometimes not my only meal of the day. Sometimes, and especially if I have worked out hard that day, I get hungry again about two hours later. That is when I go digging in the fridge for something that can is ready to eat (e.g. leftovers, salad veggies) or something that can be easily cooked.

LÄRABAR: Carrot Cake and Banana Bread

Carrot Cake (Top) and Banana Bread (Bottom)

Have you heard of Lärabars? Lärabars were actually created by a person called Lara in 2000. According to Lärabar's website, they had considered many names for the bars, but everyone kept asking for "Lara's Bars". It was only in April 2003 that the first batch of Lärabars were available for sale. And one year later, by April 2004, a million bars had been sold.

Artisana Coconut Butter

When it comes to coconut products for consumption, the product that has received the most praise (to my knowledge) is Artisana's Raw 100% Organic Coconut Butter. You might be scratching your head at this point - is there a difference between coconut butter and coconut oil?

Root vegetable chips (Trader Joe's)

Today, I reveal one of my secret weaknesses: root vegetable chips. Think plain potato chips going crunchchity-crunch in your mouth, with that filling blend of starch and saltiness. You know what? Root veggie chips offer so much more in taste.

Chilli padi from Coriander Cafe

Snack: Kale with coconut oil and sambal chilli

If you are addicted to spicy food, the sambal chilli from Coriander Cafe should satisfy your cravings. I am a chilli padi eater, and this sambal chilli is really spicy. We have found it a tasty condiment with home cooking, and have also used it to fry fish in.

Baked salmon belly

If salmon belly sashimi is too expensive, cooked salmon belly is a good alternative - the former usually costs more than S$100 / kg while the latter costs S$15.90 / kg at NTUC Fairprice. Compared to salmon steak, salmon belly is rich in good fats, which is exactly the nutritional purpose of eating oily fish. After tasting baked belly, I have never bought any other cut of salmon.

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut with freshly ground black pepper

Sauerkraut. What comes to mind? A large pork knuckle with crispy skin? A fat juicy bratwurst?

Sauerkraut is commonly used as a condiment, but uhhh... I eat it as a snack too :)

At 22kcal per 100g (1.5g protein, 1.9g carbs, 0.1g fat), this fermented cabbage packs a vitamin C and probiotics punch (possibly 13 species of gut friendly bacteria).

Melrose's ABC Spread

One of my mother's favourite nut butters is Melrose's ABC Spread. "ABC" stands for almonds, brazils and cashews, and they make up 33%, 34% and 33% of the butter respectively.
