Rojak, 183 Rojak @ Toa Payoh Central
183 Rojak sells one of mom's favourite rojaks. In addition to the standard you tiao, tau pok, cucumber, radish and beansprouts, the owners add shreds of lettuce and jellyfish, and you can ask for toasted cuttlefish. The sweet-spicy black sauce is generously nutty, and eaten cold, it makes for a great Asian salad on a hot day.

Soft Asian buns
Generally, Asian bread and Western bread are quite different to each other, don't you think? Asians seem to like soft, white, slightly sweet bread. In comparison, Westerners like more wholesome, grainy breads with harder crusts. After having successfully baked a couple of wholemeal loaves for mom, I became more confident of my baking skills and wanted to bring something to work for my colleagues. As they are Barcook Bakery fans, and I have never seen them eating bread from, eg. Swiss Bake, I knew they would want soft white "shreddable" buns, and would not care for wholemeal buns, let alone organic wholemeal buns.

Homecooked dinner: Veggie bolognese stew
Looks kind of bloody-scary, but the dark red is just from the red radish that my mother added to the bolognese stew. The other veggies in there are cauliflower, yellow pepper, mushrooms and celery.

Tau Sar Piah: Tan Hock Seng vs Mini Toast House - Part 2
It started when my mother announced merely that she had bought some tau sar piah, and showed me a plastic carton of it. When I bit into the tau sar piah, I thought it was from Tan Hock Seng along Telok Ayer Street, and I asked mom when she went there.

Da Paolo Gastronomia: Carrot Cake
After having tasted Da Paolo's Valrhona Chocolate Cake and Blackforest Cake, I wanted to compare another of its cakes against a cake that many Singaporeans have praised... a cake that my family and I have tried and truly enjoy: Cedele's Carrot Walnut Cake. So, one evening, I dropped into Da Paolo and picked up a plastic container of what looked quite different from Cedele's cake.

Tau Sar Piah: Tan Hock Seng vs Mini Toast House - Part 1
Can you guess which tau sar piah is from Tan Hock Seng along Telok Ayer Street, and which tau sar piah is from Mini Toast House at Alexandra Village Food Centre?

Biscuit Scones
One of the food blogs that I subscribe to is called Indulgence after workout. It contains heaps of reviews of desserts in Singapore, which I find useful because I do not eat desserts very often, and when I do, I want something good and worth going off Paleo for. In March, the blog reviewed scones from a couple of hotels, which in turn motivated me to try baking some scones myself.

House, Dempsey I
When we feel like having Western food, our go-to place is usually The Ship Restaurant & Bar at Shaw Centre. Over there, service is good, quality is consistent, our food arrives fast, and it is no trouble at all to have my fries substituted with vegetables. But one weekend, we wanted to try a different Western restaurant, and having read some reviews about its food, we decided to give House at Dempsey a shot.
